What to Expect During a Fence Estimate Visit

When you call a fence company to come look at your property, you're probably wondering what's actually going to happen. You might be thinking about whether they'll measure everything, how long it takes, or what questions they're going to ask. The good news is that a fence estimate doesn't have to be complicated or stressful. A professional visit should feel straightforward. The contractor shows up, walks your property, takes measurements, listens to what you want, and gives you a clear price. That's the core of it. Here at Right Fence Company in The Woodlands, we've done thousands of these, and we know what homeowners need to understand going in.

They'll Walk the Entire Property Line

The first thing we do is walk the full perimeter of where the fence will go. This isn't just a quick stroll. We're looking at the ground, checking for slope, spotting trees or obstacles, and getting a feel for the terrain. The Woodlands has plenty of properties with trees, wet spots, and uneven ground, so this matters. We're noting where the property line actually is, because sometimes homeowners think it's one place and it's actually another. We might ask you to show us any survey markers or point out where you think the line runs. If you don't have a survey and the line is unclear, we'll tell you straight up that you might need one before we start digging.

Measurements Get Written Down

We measure the distance we'll be fencing. We use a tape measure or a measuring wheel, depending on the length. For a typical residential fence, this takes ten to fifteen minutes. We're measuring the total linear feet because that's how fence pricing works. We also note any gate locations you want. If you're planning a driveway gate or a side yard entrance, that changes the estimate because gates cost more than straight fence sections. We write everything down so there's no confusion later about what we quoted.

We'll Ask About Your Preferences

A good estimate includes a conversation about what you actually want. Are you looking at wood, vinyl, aluminum, or chain link? Each material has different costs and maintenance needs. In The Woodlands, vinyl and wood are popular because they look good in residential neighborhoods. We'll ask about height, style, and color if you've already decided. If you haven't, we can walk you through the options and show you what we've installed in similar yards nearby. We'll also ask about your budget range. That helps us make sure we're giving you an estimate that matches what you're actually willing to spend.

We Check for Underground Utilities

Before anyone digs a post hole, we need to know where the utilities are. Gas lines, water lines, electric lines, and sewer lines all run underground, and hitting one is expensive and dangerous. In The Woodlands, this is especially important because many properties have underground utilities. We'll ask if you know where they run. You can also call 811 before we start work, and they'll come out and mark the lines for free. We always recommend this step. If you haven't called 811 yet, we'll mention it during the estimate, and you can schedule that before the actual fence installation begins.

You'll Get a Written Quote

At the end of the visit, we don't just give you a number and leave. We write up a quote that includes the total linear feet, the material you chose, the height, any gates, and the total price. We also note any site-specific challenges we found, like slope or obstacles that might affect installation. A written quote protects both of us. It's clear, it's specific, and you can compare it to other estimates if you're getting multiple bids. We usually provide this same day or within 24 hours.

Timeline and Next Steps

The estimate visit is also when we talk about timing. If you need the fence done by a certain date, we let you know if that's realistic. In spring and early summer, fence companies in The Woodlands get busy, so scheduling might take a few weeks. If you're ready to move forward, we'll explain what happens next. You'll sign a contract, we'll schedule the installation, and we'll do a quick site check the day before we start to make sure nothing has changed.

A fence estimate should feel like you're talking to someone who knows the trade and respects your time. You're not paying for the estimate. It's free. We do it because we want to give you accurate information and earn your business. If you're thinking about a fence for your Woodlands home, give Right Fence Company a call. We'll come out, walk your property, and show you exactly what we can build.
